The most popular portable hardness tester in the world is the Leeb hardness tester, however, there are tasks that using this method is very difficult or even impossible to solve. This is due to the physics of the method, which assumes the massiveness of the testing object, to ensure the inertness of the product when the Leeb’s impact body hits the surface with a given force. In order to solve a wider range of tasks on the rapid measurement of metal hardness, our company offers hardness testers that implement the method of ultrasonic contact impedance (UCI) in accordance with ASTM A1038. A vibrating rod (mechanical resonator) with a diamond tip acts as an indenter in these devices, when it indent into the material, the base frequency of the resonator changes, on the basis of which the hardness is calculated. This method has proven itself around the world and has been used in industry for over 50 years.

MEASURING HARDNESS OF COMPLEX SHAPED PRODUCTS

Unlike the standard Leeb probe, an ultrasonic (UCI) hardness tester probe needs an area of ​​only a few square millimeters in order to measure hardness. This allows users to measure hardness in hard-to-reach places, products of complex shape, weld and heat affected zone (HAZ), gear teeth, etc.

METHOD IS PRACTICALLY NON-DESTRUCTIVE

The imprint after measuring the hardness by the UCI method is several microns, and is practically not detected by the naked eye, in comparison with the Leeb method, the imprint of which is about 500 microns in diameter, depending on the hardness. It also makes it possible to measure the hardness of hardened layers of materials (nitriding, cementation, etc.).

As standard, the device comes with a probe whose indenter penetration force is 50N (5 kgf), this probe is the most universal and solves 90% of the tasks that can be solved using this method. PROBES UNIVERSALITY

The probe of the UCI Hardness Tester NOVOTEST T-U3 has a special nozzle, which ensures the perpendicularity of the indenter penetration into the surface of the tested object and minimizes the probability of operator error. Also, a special nozzle washer can be installed on the reverse side to operate with radius surfaces of different diameters. In the same way as it can be removed from the probe, in this case the thin nose of the probe can be installed in the grooves or in the narrow points of the product, where it is necessary to measure hardness.

UCI Probe Test Stand NOVOTEST

NOVOTEST UCI probe Test Stand is used to measure the hardness of superthin sheet products. It can be used with any UСI probes which are equipped with NOVOTEST hardness testers. The point is that the thin wall of the product, when the UCI probe indenter is indented into it, does not provide sufficient impedance (it deforms under the load of the probe). In order to compensate for this deformation, this device is used.

To ensure a snug fit to the stand base, we recommend to use couplants that have to be applied to the back side of the product. Firmly tighten the clamping screw of the stand, remove the nozzle from the UCI probe and install the probe in the corresponding groove to do test. For correct measurements, it is necessary to carry out at least 3 measurements in the mode of averaging values. Each new measurement of the series should be performed in a new place, to do it need to loos the clamping screw of the stand, and shift the product a few millimeters from the previous measurement.

 

In the most cases using UCI probes along with the stand during testing of small parts, is the optimal choice, because the operator errors while measurements significantly decreasing, that leads to the most accurate result.

The device has a diamond tip as a cone with 120 degrees of the cone apex angle and the bead size of 1/16 inch (1.5875 mm).

Description

Digital Rockwell Hardness Tester NOVOTEST TB-R-C is a digital model with new-designed large LCD screen to display the structure of menu. The bench Rockwell hardness tester has the hyper terminal setting RS-232 with good reliability, excellent operation and easy watching.

The Rockwell hardness test uses the method of measuring indentation depth. The hardness values are read directly through the LCD screen. Therefore, it is easy to operate the hardness tester with high efficiency. The hardness tester is suitable for inspect batches of spare parts. Digital Rockwell Hardness Tester NOVOTEST TB-R-C allows to use the diamond indenter and ball indenter, which can measure the hard and the soft samples. So, it has been widely used in production to become the most detecting device for inspecting the product quality and determining the reasonable processing technology.

Digital model has following advantages against analog machine:

Soft plastic, printed circuit boards, glass, elastomers, fibers, soft rubber, leather, resin, wax, neoprin, butyl, silicone, vinyl are typical testing materials for Shore Durometer. The principle of determining the hardness value of materials is based on the calculation the value of material’s resistance to the penetration of the indenter with a preset load.

Using testing stand makes measurement more stable and accurate, also it gives better repeatability of measurements.

With stand user can set the unified load and increase the measurement accuracy eliminating measurement errors, which come with operating the device manually.

Lever of the stand gives unified load and it is used to adjust the height of the Shore Durometer in accordance to the thickness of testing samples.
