ASSETMATRIX Ultrasonic testing services for electrical equipment in detecting electrical discharges; arcing, tracking and corona.
ULTRASOUND ELECTRICAL INSPECTION & TESTING SERVICES
When electrical apparatus such as switchgear, transformers, insulators or disconnects and splices fail, the results can be catastrophic. This is just as true in industrial plants as it is in the power transmission and distribution side. Electrical discharges such as arcing, tracking or, in higher voltages, corona have the potential to create equipment failure and costly downtime. In addition, the problems of RFI and TVI impact on our valuable communication networks.
As part of a comprehensive electrical preventative maintenance program or as a stand-alone service, ultrasound inspections may be performed on both open access and enclosed electrical equipment at all voltages (low, medium, and high). Ultrasound technology can be implemented by itself or in conjunction with existing systems such as infrared and vibration analysis for better condition based monitoring results.
Because ultrasonic survey testing is non-contact and nondestructive testing (NDT), there is no need to interrupt system production or plan for costly system shutdowns. Our experienced Ultrasonic Technicians inspect your electrical equipment under normal loads and operating conditions. By performing an ultrasonic scan of your electrical system in ‘real time’ our ultrasonic survey inspections can help you understand the practical impacts of emerging or existing electrical component problems.
ASSETMATRIX Ultrasonic testing services for electrical equipment uses ultrasound technology to detect high frequency sounds related to electrical discharges resulting from the ionization of arcing, tracking and corona.
The ultrasonic probe is used to identify any unusual electrical noise such as arcing, tracking and corona within the equipment, which produce ionization and disturb the surrounding air molecules. An ultrasonic probe detects high frequency sounds produced by these emissions and translates them down into the audible ranges.
The specific sound quality of each type of emission is heard in headphones while the intensity of the signal is observed on a display panel. These sounds may be recorded and analyzed through highly-specialized ultrasound software for a more accurate diagnosis. Normally, electrical equipment should be silent, although some equipment such as transformers may produce a constant hum, or some steady mechanical noises. These should not be confused with the erratic, sizzling frying, uneven and popping sound of an electrical discharge.
ASSETMATRIX’s ultrasonic testing specialists provide full-service testing solutions that can identify electrical system issues before they lead to disruptions, downtime and in server cases, failure or safety issues.
APPLICATIONS
We can inspect:
- Transformers
- Breakers of all types
- High voltage transmission lines
- Switchgear
- Underground vaults
- Circuit breakers
- Bus bars and risers
- Relays
- Contractors
- Electronic devices
- Even when metal-clad enclosures cannot be opened, airborne ultrasonic inspection equipment can “listen” through enclosure openings and vents.
ASSETMATRIX offers periodic inspections of low, medium and high voltage component of electrical equipment in industrial plants and providing detailed report on each component inspected with photos. Our target is to increase safety and reliability of electrical systems. Below are some of the types of inspections that we can undertake:
Closed Electrical Panel Inspection
With airborne ultrasound Instruments we able to carry out the inspections of medium and high voltage components in closed panels when the system is functioning without having to shut down the equipment.
Ultrasonic inspections are effective and are particularly useful in high and medium voltage and serve to identify:
- Corona Discharges
- Tracking
- Electric arc
- Microdischarges
- Electrical and mechanical problems
Each of these faults/anomalies presents a signature feature that allows for the detection.
Transformer Inspection
Ultrasound survey coupled with thermography scan is able to inspect both the oil transformer and dry-type transformer identifying: issues such as:
- Partial discharge
- Mechanical vibration
- Other faults and failures
Also in this case, it is possible to perform the analysis at a safe distance without disconnecting from the network the transformer.
Electrical Substation Inspection
A failure of system components in an electrical substations might stop supplying electricity on parts or on the entire plant with heavy economic repercussions. It is of paramount importance to prevent such failures.
The faults / failures that we find the most are:
- Crown
- Tracking
- Microdischarges
EFFECT OF CORONA ON YOUR EQUIPMENT
Corona is a phenomenon that can degrade insulators in your equipment, causing systems to fail. Once corona starts, the voltage must be decreased to get it to stop. When trouble-shooting this phenomena, many of the natural senses are used. You can often hear a hissing or cracking sound. That is why stethoscopes or ultrasonic detectors can be used to find corona.
Sometimes its presence can even be detected by a distinctive odor that indicates the presence of ozone which was produced by corona. The effect is that it will degrade insulation, reducing the reliability of the system. Since corona is a low-energy process, over long periods of time it can substantially degrade insulators, causing a system to fail. The effects are cumulative and permanent and failure can occur with no previous warning.
